Film Poster Analysis - The Blair Witch Project

This is the film poster for the horror film ‘The Blair Witch Project’. I will be looking at various aspects of the poster to see how it attracts its audience.
They use the route of the eye by putting the only white part in the first part of the route of the eye. They use an image of trees as this is where the film is set, so this gives the audience an insight to the film as soon as they look at the poster. In the second part of the route of the eye they put text describing the film. They have put this there because it is the centre of the poster, so people will notice it straight away, and they will be able to read information about the film straight away. In the third part of the route of the eye they have put the name of the film. This is to show the audience the name of the film and it also gives a small insight to what the film is called. In the middle of the four hotspots they have put the main text of the poster, which describes the film. They have put this here because this is where the audience will look, and it informs them of the film. They have also put the male’s eyebrows in the two hotspots at the bottom, which shows the eyebrows are raised, showing he is worried. They have put these here because it shows the audience that the character is worried, which shows an insight into the film. They have put the text and also the small image of the ‘Blair Witch’ in the primary optical area. They have put the image here as it is an important part of the film, and is the symbol for the whole film. When the audience first see it on the poster, they think of it as a mystical symbol, but as they watch the film, they understand what it is about, so they are revealing a big symbol of the film without the audience realising it. In the dead areas they have put plain black, as people don’t tend to look here so there is no point putting information in them.
The text they have put on the page is a main part of the poster. They have put this text because it is effectively explaining the whole film. They have used this text because it lets the audience know the introduction to the film, and it also means when they watch the film that they don’t have to watch a long winded introduction, it can get straight into the action. They have also put the name of the film at the bottom of the page because it is the last place the audience look, so they remember the name of the film.  Underneath this, they have put all the usual details about who is in the film, who the producer and directors are, and also the website for the film. They have put this there so the audience see it last and remember it. They have used a basic font throughout the poster, because it has a lot of information on it, so they want to keep it simple and easy to understand.

They have used just black and white on the poster, with the majority of it being black. This is because the film is set in a forest, and they are always dark, and it also associated with being scary, which is what the film is about. The only white on the page is at the top of the trees, where the sky is, because that is the only light part in a forest. They have also used white text because it stands out against the black. They have also used red text for the website address, so it stands out against everything on the poster and people remember it. They have also used a red image of the symbol of the ‘blair witch,’ which is red because they want it to stand out, as it is what the film is based on.

They have used 2 images on the poster. The first is of a male shining a torch in his face to be seen on camera, as he is in a dark forest. You can see the worry in his face, as his eyebrows are raised and his eyes looked worried. They have used this as he is a main character in the film, and also it shows how he is talking to the camera by shining the light in his face. The second image they have used is the skyline of a forest, where you can see the sunlight and the tops of the trees. They have used this image because the film is set in a forest, and the only little sunlight there is comes from the gaps in the trees. They have also put it at the top of the page because the picture of the man is underneath it, which shows he is in the forest, which gives an insight into the film.
